Road to Williston Project

Bakken Boom! Artists Respond to the North Dakota Oil Rush

@ Plains Art Museum January 29, 2015 - August 15, 2015 - Fargo Fred J. Donath Memorial and William and Anna Jane Schlossman Galleries, General Exhibition

Road to Williston Project

This project meditates on environmental issues caused by extraction and mining industries and the trafficking of women. The art installation features the following artist's work:
  • Kathy McTavish - video and sound artist
  • Sheila Packa - writer
  • Erika Mock - fiber sculpture
  • Liz Jaakola & Oshkii Giizhik Singers
The 18 minute video loop is an evocative abstract film designed by Kathy McTavish.  Sheila Packa's voice tells the story of a journey through the underworld into rebirth. The text is excerpted from her books, Echo & Lightning and Night Train Red Dust.  "The Survivor's Song"  by Liz Jaakola & Sarah Curtiss and performed by Liz Jaakola and the Oshkii Giizhik Singers attest to women's strength. Erika Mock has created the fiber sculpture.  Kathy McTavish, artist, Tina Olson, director of Mending the Sacred Hoop, and Jessica Tillman conceived of this project.  Click on the above link for more details!

The exhibition also features the work of Alex Soth and several other artists http://plainsart.org/exhibits/bakken-boom-artists-respond-to-the-north-dakota-oil-rush/
